BorderLine Adventures Bear Hunts

Minnesota Black Bear The black bear was originally found throughout Minnesota, but is now found mainly in northern woodlands. Bears lead solitary lives except when females are rearing their young, or when concentrations of food bring bears together.

Before European settlement, grizzly bears also roamed in what is today Minnesota, mainly in the western prairies. Grizzlies have been extirpated (locally extinct) from Minnesota for more than 150 years. An average adult black bear weighs between 150 and 300 pounds, but can reach up to 500 pounds, and stands two to three feet at the shoulders. Coat color may vary from light brown to deep black.

The black bear is omnivorous, eating grasses, fruits, berries, buds or leaves, nuts, insects and their larvae, and on small animals, deer fawns, and carrion. Less than ten percent of a bear's food is animal matter. During hibernation, a female will give birth to one to four young. At birth, cubs weigh eight to ten ounces and are hairless. They grow rapidly, weigh about five pounds by the time they leave the den, and 60 to 100 pounds by their first year.

Accommodations:  BorderLine Adventures is located in the North Country of Minnesota.  This cabin has full electricity, two refrigerators, a microwave, satellite TV, wood burning stove and a LP gas furnace, a LP gas range/oven, indoor shower and bathroom, there is also a relaxing rustic cedar sauna next to the cabin, where you can rest and relax after a hard days hunt.  No north woods retreat would be complete without a North Country outhouse, for those who wish to rough it up a bit.  Provided with your cost are two cooked meals per day; a late morning breakfast/brunch and a dinner after the evening hunt.  If you desire more, it will be your responsibility for any refreshments/snacks not included in the meals, to be supplied by you the customer.  Orr, MN is about a 20 minute drive and has full Laundromat, grocery store and liquor purchasing facility.

Clothing Suggestions:

  • Camouflage: Any type of woodland or conifer camo will do.  We try to put the stands in pine trees for added background cover and to help with scent cover.  Temps may range from 20 to 70 degrees so bring both light and heavy apparel.  Hunting clothes stay out in the garage to prevent household scent from contaminating your clothing.
  • Rubber knee high boots are the best for comfort; some stands may be in swampy areas, and again for scent control.  Gloves and head gear for camouflaging and bug control as they can be bad this time of year.
  • Extra pair of underwear for when you get that big one coming in to your bait and you put him down.

Other Activities:   During downtime when not hunting (or you got your bear), we suggest the following activities.

  • Fishing:  There are several lakes in the area so if this is something you would like to do bring your gear and a boat with you if you like, or we can assist you in setting something up.
  • Golf and/or Gambling:  There is a brand new world class golf course about an hour drive away at Fortune Bay Casino.   (We’ve had hunters actually win enough at the casino to pay for their hunt, if you’re the gambling type.)
  • Food/Entertainment:  Local towns like Orr (25 miles) and Cook (35 miles) have limited facilities, but there are many good places to eat and have a good time.  The Dam Supper Club is about 20 miles away has nightly specials.

Scent Control Products:  Using scent killer spray and scent control clothing will greatly increase your chances of bagging a bear as they can be very wary.  We use and swear by them.  Wildlife Research makes a great product appropriately called “Scent Killer”.  Bring at least two 24 oz. bottles with spray tips.

License:  Applications will be available in March 2006.  The deadline to have the application in is May 5, 2006.  The 2006 season runs from September 1st through October 16th.  Residents and Non-residents can participate in the drawing for licenses within bear permit areas.  Our area is Area 25.  Leftover licenses remaining after the drawing will be available beginning in early August.  Preference for any following year hunts is not affected by purchasing leftover licenses.  Only one bear license per year though.  Licenses MUST be validated at the site of the kill.

Means of Bagging your Bear:

  • If using a shotgun with slugs, use a 16 or a 12 gauge.
  • If using a rifle, the lightest caliber we suggest is a .308.
  • If using a handgun, bring at least a .44 Magnum.
  • If you are using archery, we suggest at least a 55 pound draw weight bow with a minimum of a 100 grain fixed blade broadhead.  That broadhead has to have at least 7/8 of an inch cutting diameter according to MN state law.

BorderLine Adventures Wounded Bear Policy: A wounded bear is your bear for that hunt. We will make every possible effort to assist you to track and recover any wounded bear. However, if a wounded bear is not recovered, that is still your bear for that hunt. We can offer a second chance opportunity hunt for an additional $300.00. Please understand we are operating a bear guiding service and bears are our business.

BorderLine Adventures is located between Cook and Orr Minnesota and can accomodate 4 individuals per each hunt. With the purchase of a Guided 5 Day Drop Hunt, we will supply a baited site with a stand, meals, and lodging.
